Developing a product sustainability platform for Argos

Argos

Argos, a multi-national cement and concrete producer, worked with PRé on a comprehensive approach for developing a product sustainability programme. A SimaPro database provided consistency, flexibility and reliability to the project.

Challenge

Argos enlisted the help of PRé Sustainability to create a comprehensive approach to product sustainability, to be deployed across the facilities in each of its regions. The platform needed to be consistent between different countries and facility types, and should rely on the same type of data and measurements. It was decided to build the platform around a SimaPro database.

Solution

PRé first worked with Argos to gather data and take measurements on a number of representative products across facilities in Colombia, the Caribbean, and the United States. The data from these projects was then used to construct a SimaPro database. The second phase of the project focused on expanding the database to include data from additional products and facilities. The database ensures that Argos can use this information in future sustainability projects, such as the creation of EPDs and the development of new sustainable products. With the database, sustainability teams can leverage previous work and easily expand sustainability programs to address additional facilities and products.

Business value

Working with PRé, Argos was able to launch and expand a product sustainability platform that leverages the strengths of SimaPro. Because the heart of the project is a custom database, Argos can rapidly expand its product sustainability efforts across multiple countries, facilities, and products. The database is organized to have maximum flexibility in its application, and can be scaled across multiple additional software tools to provide useful and actionable information to the various business functions within Argos, such as sales and marketing, operations, and innovation.

We have been using SimaPro for over a decade now. Currently as a server application, which is much more convenient when you have several users. We often need to go deep into the inventory to see where specific impacts come from, with SimaPro this is possible. Also working with parameters makes SimaPro extra valuable.
